The nature
of Cape Cod is to elude. Sands shift continuously, removing bits of
the delicate hook, pushing it northwards. Pilgrims eroded the original
balance between soil and sand. These transplanted people were busy,
seeking illusory farmland and burning hardwoods for heating and for
rendering salt from the sea. Parts of the Cape even now have returned
to nature's beginnings, supporting lichens, aspiring to mosses, then
beach grass, then pines, and perhaps finally a forest of beech.
The nature
of photography is to elucidate. These photographs express one person's
reactions to the Cape. My wish is that they make apparent aspects of
this elusive environment that cannot completely shake the hand of man
and that may be otherwise overlooked.
