"Favorite Children"... photos I especially like... how they came to be/why they are special to me. I was photographing a pair of miniature horses—one more or less cooperative, one very shy—when they got tired of investigating my camera bag and ambled further into their pasture. The light was going since the sun had set, and I was about to pack up when I noticed a butterfly nearby. I had been told to always look behind me after a sunset—the light might reveal something equally as pleasing as the intended subject. As luck would have it, the butterfly settled long enough for me to grab this shot. Normally I'm not that interested in butterfly photos, because the "beautiful butterfly resting on the beautiful blossom" is usually trite. But this time, all the elements came together, and the spots on this Striated Queen (of the Milkweed, or Monarch family) were repeated in the soothing, rippled background. Striated Queen Butterfly For you horse fanciers (miniature or full size), here's my favorite photo of one of the intended subjects of that shoot, the shy, pregnant mare named "Princess." Princess |
